Review:
Retro
Doom Bands seem to be all the range these days. Some bands succeed in
channelling the riffs from the legendary bands of the 70s/80s whilst
most fail at the first hurdle. Dunbarrow are a band who succeed in
creating stunning retro occult based doom riffs. Fans of Kadavar,
Pentagram and Black Sabbath will sure get a kick from their new self
titled album.
The
album contains 9 meaty tracks of pure vintage quality doom metal.
Sure the guys aren't doing anything different that's came before them
but that's beside the point. Dunbarrow excel in playing a more
gloomier kind of Occult/Doom Metal. The album has a great vintage
sound. This is an album you can believe that was truly recorded in
the 1970s but that is being discovered by a modern day audience.
The
album opens with two excellent tracks – Try And Fall and The
Wanderer – which allows the band to expand their blues heavy sound.
Espen's vocals add a real emotional quality to proceedings as the band
have written some great lyrics to lose yourself in. And that's just
the tip of the iceberg as Dunbarrow lay their soul on the line a
times. You Knew I Was A Snake being a highlight as the album carries
a sombre mood with Espen on fine form once more.
Dunbarrow's
debut album oozes quality from start to finish. What more do you want
from a doom metal album. You've got riffs, trippy psychedelic vibes,
creepy moments and fantastic sounding proto-metal sounds to rock out
to. A stunning debut album.
